Sony Ericsson's new flagship business handset, looking much like an updated M600 with wider keys and a pair of cameras, gets support for both UMTS and WiFi 802.11b high speed connectivity in addition to a host of other improvements. For starters, the P1 gets a new 2.6" QVGA transflective TFT display that should be much easier to read under direct sunlight. The new main camera has a 3.2MP sensor along with auto-focus that can be used to scan business cards and import the data directly into the contacts application. Media support includes a host of music file formats, streaming TV, and a built-in RDS capable FM receiver. A pair of wired headphones are included in the retail package, as is a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card to augment the 160MB of built-in storage.

Sadly, the P1 is a tri-band GSM device (900/1800/1900MHz) that supports only slow GPRS data network connections. UMTS is supported on the European 2100MHz band, which makes it quite clear that the P1 is not destined for North American shores. The new P1, which runs UIQ 3.0 on top of Symbian OS v9.1, now has support for a wide range of push email solutions, including Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and BlackBerry Connect. The QWERTY keyboard supports predictive text, but those that prefer to use a stylus can opt for on-screen handwriting recognition instead.

Sony Ericsson K660 Mobile Phones

Today in London Sony Ericsson unveiled the new K660 handset. This compact HSDPA capable 3G phone comes with a number of features meant to improve mobile web browsing. One such feature is a set of shortcut keys on the phone that only light up when the web browser is running. The browser also has a landscape mode to make it easier to read certain websites. The K660's NetFront web browser has been enhanced to make navigation easier and allows for zooming and what Sony Ericsson calls 'magnetic mouse' control. On top of that, a standby screen 'ticker' function lets users get updates from their favorite websites without having to pull up the web browser or the RSS feed reader. The K660 also comes with Google maps pre-installed, something that is becoming quite common these days.

Other non-web related features include a 2 megapixel camera and quad-band GSM/EDGE support on top of the UMTS/HSDPA support on the 2100MHz frequency band. The K660 also has a built-in IM client, support for mobile email, and Bluetooth stereo support. The main display on the K660 is a reasonably large 2" QVGA resolution screen, and the phone comes equipped with a Sony Memory Stick Micro slot and matching 256MB card for storing photos and music files.

The K660 is going to be available in two color schemes when it starts shipping in Q1 of 2008: green on white and purple on black. Sony Ericsson has not announced specific market launch plans or pricing at this time.

Sony Ericsson's New HSDPA W760 Walkman Phone

Today here in Las Vegas at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony Ericsson announced 3 new handsets, including the brand new Walkman branded cell phone, the W760. The W760 is meant to provide a lot of functionality when it comes to multimedia and games, for sure, but also sports tri-band HSDPA 3G data. This means that it will work on AT&T's 850/1900MHz UMTS network as well as on the 2100MHz networks found in other parts of the world. If users happen to find themselves without 3G coverage, the W760's quad-band GSM/EDGE support will make sure that they are not cut off.

Some of the more interesting features on the W760 include a built-in GPS with both Wayfinder and Google Maps support, stereo speakers, and what Sony Ericsson is calling "Motion Sensing Gaming", a feature that lets games be controlled by moving the phone, rather than relying solely on d-pads and softkeys. Games on the W760 can be played in both portrait and landscape modes, and the multimedia functions of the phone also work in both modes. All it takes is a quick turn of the phone to switch from one view to the other.

Other features of note on this 103g slider phone include an FM radio, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 1GB memory stick storage card, and Sony Ericsson's "Tracker" fitness program, which makes use of the built-in GPS receiver. The W760 is slated to go on sale in Q2 of this year, though Sony Ericsson has not provided any carrier or pricing information.

Sony Ericsson W910 Mobile Phones

Sony Ericsson W910 comes in a nice compressed black-and-orange box with all the necessary gear to get you started - charger, USB data cable, stereo headset, 1GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) (in our case, you may get yours with 2GB card), plus the usual papers and installation CDs. A tiny piece of hardware will make your face broaden into a grin. For the first time, a compact Sony Ericsson USB 2.0 M2 card reader with a status LED and a strap is included in the retail box. We ran a quick test on it comparing presentation to a ordinary card reader on USB 2.0. The standard reader transferred 113 tracks totaling 492 MB in 4:30 min, while the Sony Ericsson USB 2.0 M2 card reader executed the task in almost the same time - 4:20 min.
